On the radio, the maudlin pop song is cut short by an emergency report: a motorcycle crash on some highway that barely exists in his mind. The man thinks back to his first love, glancing at the “borrowed” jacket that still hangs on the back of his door—it couldn’t be that boy, he thinks. That boy gave up his motorcycle decades ago. Last the man heard, he was in the army. Before the man can think a half-baked prayer for the fallen driver, the pop song starts up again, so instead, he starts to sing along.
