Antique English lustreware pottery pitcher

All of the lustreware pieces in this collection are pottery, not solid metal. Silver lustreware was created using a metallic glaze, often with platinum oxide, which was fired onto the surface to produce a reflective finish that mimics polished silver. Sometimes called “poor man’s silver,” these pieces offered an elegant yet affordable alternative to sterling.

This type of lustreware was especially popular in England during the early 19th century, dating approximately from 1820 to 1840. Today, these pieces are appreciated not only for their decorative appeal but also for their place in ceramic history, reflecting both innovation in glazing techniques and the tastes of the period.
